The NFL needs to recognize the benefits of medicinal marijuana

Ravens tackle Eugene Monroe opened up about the NFL’s outdated approach to player health.

Andrew Weber-USA TODAY Sports

“This is not about marijuana. It’s about a more sensible approach to health care and research so we can protect the game and its players!”

Doug Farrar talked to Ravens tackle Eugene Monroe about the NFL’s outdated approach to players and marijuana following Monroe’s decision to open up about the need to recognize the value of medicinal marijuana this week. The fact is, it’s time the league recognized the potential benefit to players in preventing head trauma and start researching that. If the health of its players really is more than just a talking point to the NFL, then the league should leave no stone unturned when it comes to researching the benefits of medical marijuana or any other number of treatments that can have a positive impact on players’ long-term health.

BIG DEAL: Patriots trade Chandler Jones to Cardinals for Jonathan Cooper, second-round pick. There was a blockbuster trade on Tuesday. The Cardinals are happy to get a bona fide pass rusher. He'll be a nightmare matchup for a weak group of left tackles in the NFC West, too. The trade is a huge help to the Patriots' interior line.

PATS GET LONG: Patriots sign defensive end Chris Long. In the aftermath of the Jones trade, the Patriots have signed a potential short-term replacement.

GOODBYE JOHNNY: The Fall of Johnny Football: How did it go so wrong for Manziel? The MMQB combed through Johnny Manziel’s past and spoke to more than a dozen people who are or were in the quarterback’s inner circle to find out: Just how did it go so wrong? Has Johnny Football played his last NFL game? And if so, does he even care? This is a fantastic article from Emily Kaplan.

DENVER KEEPS ANDERSON: Broncos will hang on to C.J. Anderson after all. Denver matched the massive deal the Dolphins gave Anderson.

DON’T KNOW JACK: Deion Jones runs a blistering 40, Myles Jack doesn’t. LSU and UCLA had their pro days on Tuesday. The main attraction, Jack, was still sidelined from running, and he won’t run until April 1. Meanwhile, the LSU linebacker was burning up the track.

NEW WRINKLE IN THE CONCUSSION CASE: Monday’s CTE admission quickly becomes an issue in concussion settlement. Monday’s sky-is-blue concession from NFL senior VP of player health and safety Jeff Miller regarding the link between Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy and football could have some less obvious collateral damage for the league.

HE’S NO DEZ: Laquon Treadwell can knock the hell out of you, but can he be a No. 1 receiver in the NFL? The Ole Miss product is a big, physical receiver and one of the best NFL Draft prospects at that position. However, retired NFL defensive end Stephen White sees a few areas for improvement.

PACKERS INTERESTED IN COOK: Green Bay is interested in tight end Jared Cook ... again. Ted Thompson wanted Jared Cook last year. Now, the Packers will visit with the former Rams tight end this week.

BREES’ PYRAMID SCHEME: Questions surround AdvoCare, nutrition empire endorsed by Saints QB Drew Brees. With the Saints QB leading the way, AdvoCare is using its sports ties to build a nutrition empire. But is the company really pushing false hope?
