NFL lets a player put his actual name on his jersey

Vikings German wide receiver Moritz Boehringer has been given permission to place that all-important umlaut on his uniform.

Score one for the players. Moritz Boehringer, the German wide receiver selected by the Vikings in the sixth round of the NFL Draft, has been granted permission by the NFL to put an umlaut (the mark or vowel placed over a German word) on his uniform.

Boehringer took to Twitter following the announcement to celebrate.

Boehringer joins Washington wide receiver Pierre Garçon, who sports a cedilla under the “c” of his last name, as the only two current players in the NFL with marks on their jerseys. Former Rams guard Tom Nütten also used to have an umlaut.

Boehringer is the first European player with no college experience to ever get drafted. He most recently played for Germany’s Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns where he caught 70 balls for 1,461 yards and 16 touchdowns.

In an interview before the draft, Boehringer told SB Nation that he first learned about football by watching Adrian Peterson videos on YouTube when he was around 17. He quickly became a Vikings fan and via the Internet, he found a local team to try out for.
