Tyrann Mathieu might soon be the highest-paid safety in the league, according to Ian Rapoport, which is kind of funny since he’s more of a hybrid corner/safety.
Tyrann Mathieu is mostly a cornerback, but he’s about to be the highest-paid safety in the NFL
The Cardianls and Tyrann Mathieu are closing in on a deal that will make him the highest-paid safety in the NFL.

The Cardinals have gotten incredible value from the Honey Badger since drafting him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He might have been a first-round pick if not for getting booted from LSU’s football team in 2012, a year after he was a Heisman finalist. His rookie deal paid him $3,052,500 for the first four years of his career. Now, he’ll be looking at a deal that should pay him more than $10 million per year, if that’s the yardstick the Cardinals are using to make him the highest-paid safety. (If it’s guaranteed money, he’ll wind up north of Devin McCourty’s $28 million, and if it’s going by total value, he should top Jairus Byrd’s $54 million deal with the Saints).
He’s played 68 percent of his snaps as a slot corner, 24 percent at strong safety and eight percent as a free safety, according to Pro Football Focus. Making him the highest-paid safety saves the Cardinals some money compared to making him the highest-paid cornerback; the average annual value for the four highest-paid cornerbacks starts at $14 million.
It’s a risk for the Cardinals. Mathieu has torn his ACL twice since being drafted, but he’s done everything the Cardinals have asked of him on and off the field.
PANTHERS ARE CUTTING ALL THEIR VETERAN CORNERS
The Panthers released cornerback Brandon Boykin, who they just signed as a free agent in March. Carolina is going with an all-rookie group of cornerbacks, for now.
WILFORK RULES
Vince Wilfork and his wonderful overalls made a surprise appearance at J.J. Watt’s charity softball game. Every baseball uniform needs to be replaced with overalls from now on.
FREE AGENCY, ROUND TWO
There are still some decent players available in NFL free agency. The second wave of free agency is here and there are plenty of big-name players still available. One of those players is Dwight Freeney, and he’s maybe interested in joining Bill Belichick and the Patriots.
RUSSELL WILSON CONTROVERSY
Why Russell Wilson’s NC State exit is controversial again, five years later. We’re not over this yet?
NO TAILGATING?
Tailgating at U.S. Bank Stadium could be in trouble. The space that was expected to be available for tailgating at the new stadium may wind up being limited.
CONCERNS ABOUT NOAH SPENCE
What anonymous scouts said about Noah Spence. The Bucs pass rusher could be one of the best picks in the draft. Then again “... you have to decide if you want to put up with him.”
HAYNE RETIRING
Jarryd Hayne is retiring to pursue his Olympic dreams. This certainly comes out of nowhere. San Francisco 49ers running back Jarryd Hayne has announced his retirement from the NFL. He will pursue an Olympic rugby opportunity. His teammates, coaches, the GM and everyone else will miss him.
OUT OF SHAPE
Browns top pick Corey Coleman wasn’t in very good shape when he showed up to camp. “We didn’t know it was going to be so much running.” Whoops! Coach Hue Jackson pulled him aside for a little talk about conditioning, and with OTAs and camp coming up, he should be fine.
NFC EAST TRASH TALK
Washington players are talking trash about the Eagles. My, how the NFC East has changed.
WHY WE CARE ABOUT LOCKETTE
Why we care about Ricardo Lockette, a retired receiver with 22 career catches. The Seahawks receiver hasn’t exactly had a superstar career, but he got everything he wanted out it.
TITANS DUMP METTENBERGER
The Titans waived Zach Mettenberger, who was never a very good quarterback, at least not for a first-round pick, but with two years left on his rookie deal could be a fine backup for some team.
