Sunday’s AFC Wild Card matchup will include the rallying Miami Dolphins against the offensively loaded Pittsburgh Steelers.
Dolphins vs. Steelers 2017: Time, TV schedule for NFL playoffs
This AFC battle will feature two of the best running backs in the league.
This is the fourth time — and first since 1985 — that these two teams will suit up against each other in the postseason. The last time they met over 30 years ago, the Dolphins ended up with a 45-28 victory to advance to Super Bowl XIX. Miami holds the winning record in these AFC battles, besting the Steelers two out of three times.
The Steelers rested Ben Roethlisberger, Le’Veon Bell, and Antonio Brown in Week 17, marking the first time all three high-powered offensive weapons will be healthy heading into the playoffs. Brown ranked second in the NFL — and first in the AFC — with 106 receptions this season. It’s no surprise he is one of Roethlisberger’s favorite targets, and his 481 receptions since 2013 are the most in league history in any four-year span.
The team will need help from its defensive line in order to stop Miami’s rushing attack, though. Despite a slow start to the season, and an injured quarterback, the Dolphins’ ground game continues to wreak havoc for defenses.
The Dolphins started the season 1-4, but then won nine of the next 11 games to finish out the year. The team took a whooping in Week 17 against the Patriots, but they had already clinched a playoff spot before that. Further complicating things for Miami is that the team is without starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has been sidelined with a knee injury since Week 14. Backup Matt Moore has stepped up to replace Tannehill, and has done enough to keep the offense afloat.
There’s still hope that Tannehill can return if the Dolphins advance in the playoffs, but head coach Adam Gase won’t rush him back if it puts Tannehill’s future at risk.
Moore has help spreading out the offense with an impressive ground game from Jay Ajayi. The running back ranked fourth in the NFL with a career-high 1,272 rushing yards during the regular season. Ajayi rushed for 204 yards and two touchdowns when the Dolphins faced the Steelers back in October -- one of three 200-yard rushing games for the back this season.
Miami won that Week 6 matchup, coming away with a surprising 30-15 win. This time around, though, the game will be in Pittsburgh. The Steelers also won seven straight games to close out the regular season. And when it comes to postseason play, Pittsburgh has the advantage, having won 34 playoff games -- tied for the most in NFL history with the Dallas Cowboys.
This marks the first playoff appearance for the Dolphins since 2008. Miami has a 20-20 record in the postseason.
If the Dolphins win Sunday, they will move on to the Divisional round to play the Patriots on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 8:15 p.m. ET. However, should the Steelers come away with the victory, they will face the Kansas City Chiefs next Sunday, Jan. 15 at 1:05 p.m. ET.
