Bill Belichick has made it a point of emphasis to defer to the second half in receiving kickoffs, having only elected to receive the opening half kickoff four times in his 17-year Patriots tenure. Those four opening-half drives yielded just three points.
This isn’t the fifth time, as Belichick lost the toss, but it’s worth noting. The Patriots likely would’ve elected to kick had they won the toss. They’ll now look to strike first in what could be a high-scoring matchup between two talented offenses.
