In addition to winning the MVP trophy, past Super Bowl MVPs have traditionally received cars. In 2016, that unspoken precedent appeared to have been broken.
What does the Super Bowl MVP get for winning the award?
Will this year’s MVP get a new car for winning the honors? The details still aren’t very clear.
Hyundai took over as the NFL’s corporate sponsor before the 2015 NFL season, and with the new partnership ended the league’s unofficial tradition of rewarding Super Bowl MVPs with new cars. That’s not to say things can’t change this year, but as of now, it doesn’t appear they will.
Last year’s Super Bowl MVP, Von Miller, was not gifted a vehicle for winning the honors. He did, however, purchase — and donate — a car. Miller gifted a 2016 Ford Explorer to the DeSoto police department out of pocket, and he also funded a scholarship for the DeSoto fire department. These two moves commemorated DeSoto, the Texas town where Miller grew up and went to high school.
Tom Brady, MVP of the 2015 Super Bowl, gave his Chevrolet Colorado to cornerback Malcolm Butler, who sealed the Patriots’ victory over the Seahawks with a game-winning interception.
In 2014, Seahawks linebacker Malcolm Smith won Super Bowl MVP, as well as a new Chevrolet Silverado. The year prior, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco drove home in a Chevrolet Corvette after winning MVP. Several other past MVPs also received unique cars as tokens of accomplishment from the NFL’s automotive corporate sponsors. (You can check out some of those sweet rides right here.)
Prior to Miller, the last Super Bowl MVP to miss out on a new ride was Drew Brees. The Saints quarterback won the award in 2010, right after Cadillac ended its eight-year promotional giveaway.
Car or no car, this year’s Super Bowl MVP will still be awarded a trophy. The Pete Rozelle Trophy will be given to this year’s MVP, just as it has been to past Super Bowl MVPs.
For those who want to see the Super Bowl MVP get a car, here’s some interesting news. Genesis announced it would award G80 sedans to the Pro Bowl MVPs, who ended up being Travis Kelce and Lorenzo Alexander.
Perhaps the NFL has arranged a new sponsorship deal and will announce it Sunday night after the Atlanta Falcons or New England Patriots secure a Super Bowl victory.
