Alshon Jeffery signs with Eagles and instantly becomes their best WR

The best wide receiver on the free agent market is no longer available. Despite a few obstacles over the course of the 2016 season, Alshon Jeffery has signed a long-term deal with the Philadelphia Eagles, the team announced Thursday. Jeffery seemed destined to land with a new team after the Chicago Bears declined to place the franchise tag on him.

According to Anderson, Jeffery joins the Eagles on a one-year deal worth $14 million.

The 27-year-old wideout has become a superstar in his five-year NFL career, tallying over 4,500 receiving yards as well as 26 touchdowns. Jeffery managed to do so despite relative chaos during his entire tenure. Chicago has had quarterback issues for the past few years and, perhaps as a result, has not been a great football team.

Jeffery has already played under three different NFL head coaches, on a roster where turnover seems to happen at a higher trajectory than it does on most other teams.

That said, Jeffery’s production in Chicago was impressive nonetheless. The receiver has an impressive skill set, which Philadelphia seems to deem valuable enough to command the type of money they just shelled out his way.

The Eagles will certainly hope Jeffery’s past issues — he’s struggled to stay on the field and was suspended for PEDs last season — are in the rear-view, as he’s capable of becoming one of the league’s top pass catchers if he can stay healthy.

The Eagles needed to upgrade the wide receiver corps after a 2016 season they finished with just 224.1 passing yards per game, which put them 24th in the league in 2016. Carson Wentz now has a bona-fide No. 1 receiver to throw to, provided Jeffery can stay on the field.

Jeffery will join Torrey Smith, who is also headed to Philadelphia after being cut by the 49ers.
