Aaron Hernandez commits suicide in prison

The former Patriots tight end was discovered dead early Wednesday morning in his cell.

Aaron Hernandez, the former New England Patriots tight end convicted of murder in 2015, committed suicide in his Massachusetts prison cell, the Boston Globe reported Wednesday citing corrections officials.

Hernandez was serving a life term without the possibility of parole after a jury found him guilty of the 2013 first-degree murder of Odin Lloyd, a semi-pro football player. A statement from prison officials cited by Boston media indicates that Hernandez hung himself with a bed sheet overnight, was found by officers early Wednesday, and pronounced dead.

Hernandez, a Connecticut native, was an All-American tight end at the University of Florida and was named a Pro Bowl alternate in his second season in the NFL with the Patriots. He found himself in legal trouble repeatedly, however.

In 2013, Massachusetts State Police arrested Hernandez due to his suspected role in the murder of Lloyd.

Hernandez was recently found not guilty in a separate 2012 double-homicide in Boston.

Hernandez leaves behind a 4-year-old daughter.
