It is Pete Carroll’s tradition that on the verge of the NFL draft, the Seahawks head coach will cheekily tweet some clues about who his team will pick. It’s not the most scientific process in the world; Seattle doesn’t have the first overall pick, and Carroll’s been known to have some fun with the exercise.
Can you figure out Pete Carroll’s Seahawks draft clues?
Let’s play the NFL draft’s most convoluted game.

Let’s play for 2017. The clues:
Those are the clues Carroll had offered up as of press time. I have my suspicions, but they’re probably incorrect, and I don’t want to poison the well. Who’s he got in mind?
Some previous examples of Carroll’s clue-sharing shenanigans are here, from 2014 and 2016. There’s not much obvious rhyme or reason between Carroll’s previous clues and the Seahawks’ actual first-round picks in those years, but it’s there if you really look for it. Here’s an example from Seahawks blog Field Gulls last year:
The analysis:
There are a few things you could focus on here, but to me the word “West” is the most relevant. Northwestern, Western Michigan, Western Kentucky...I think that’s the connection to look for.
Top 10: Germain Ifedi attended Westside HS.
Top 10: Nick Vannett is from Westerville, OH.
UDFA: George Fant went to Western Kentucky.
UDFA: Trevone Boykin went to West Mesquite HS.
This is a post-draft deciphering, but it makes sense. Good luck guessing the connection between clue and reality ahead of time, though.
We’ll update this post once the Seahawks have connected the dots for us at the end of the first round on Thursday night.
