The Kansas City Chiefs wrapped up the preseason Thursday night against the Tennessee Titans. Alex Smith has already been named the Week 1 starting quarterback and didn’t play in this game, so first-round rookie Patrick Mahomes got the start.

Watch your back, Alex Smith!

Mahomes played the entire first half and shredded the Titans’ secondary with some absolutely beautiful rainbow passes. Here’s his first big highlight of the game.
Here’s another one, which is even more impressive given that Mahomes is scrambling and throwing across his body.
And here’s a screaming bullet that Mahomes almost flicks with his wrist, making it look criminally easy.
Mahomes didn’t have a perfect night — he completed just 9 of 16 passes — but he once again showed that his arm is NFL-ready, throwing for 183 yards and averaging an outstanding 11.4 yards per attempt. When the third quarter started, Mahomes sat for Tyler Bray, his night over.
Overall, it was an impressive preseason audition for Mahomes, and it should be only a matter of time before he replaces Smith for good. We’ll see how long Andy Reid can afford to keep him on the bench.
