We’re so here for Chewbacca and R2-D2 announcing the 49ers’ NFL Draft picks

The NFL gets plenty of things wrong. But they’re getting at least one thing right with this year’s NFL Draft. The league will have Chewbacca and R2-D2 announce the San Francisco 49ers’ Day 3 draft picks.

The third day of the NFL Draft is basically the Phantom Menace of the whole affair. It’s the one you’re least likely to sit through again once you know what it has in store for you. But if the NFL wants people to actually tune in for those late-round picks, the best way to do that is by getting two undisputed fan favorites, Chewy and R2-D2, from the Star Wars universe involved in the spectacle.

R2-D2, that lively little droid who isn’t afraid of anything, including the Evil Empire and all of C-3PO’s drama, will be accompanied by Chewy, Han Solo’s first mate and hands-down the greatest Wookiee of all time, who will announce the Niners’ fifth-round pick, No. 142. (Trades could change things, of course.)

The picks are being announced from Lucasfilm’s Northern California headquarters. Chewbacca and R2-D2 will be joined by Ron Howard, who directed the standalone Han Solo film that’s coming out in late May, Solo: A Star Wars Story. A bunch of Stormtroopers will be there too, and I’m just going to pretend like they’ve all made like Finn and joined the resistance because I don’t care about seeing a bunch of soldiers loyal to the dark side announce a 49ers draft pick.

Chewbacca and R2-D2 aren’t the only special guest pick announcers on Day 3. An actual parrot delivered the details of the Buccaneers’ fourth-round pick to a person, who then announced it from the pirate ship in Raymond James Stadium. What could go wrong?

Wookiees speak Shyriiwook, and that’s not exactly a commonly understood language outside of Kashyyyk. R2-D2 speaks Droidspeak, and I’d be willing to bet that none of us is fluent in that one, either. Luckily, we have a translator.
