Fired Giants coach Ben McAdoo is glad the team stuck with QB he benched

McAdoo shared his feelings about Eli Manning, the Giants, and the NFC East in a candid interview this week.

It’s July. There’s not much happening in the NFL world, beyond a cascade of arrests and a team owner using an official platform to talk about politics. Now, former New York Giants head coach Ben McAdoo is graciously helping to fill that void in a candid interview with the New York Post.

Despite being fired with four games left to play last year, McAdoo is still bullish on the Giants’ future.

“I think they’re gonna win the division,” he said.

And why does he think that?

“I think they’ve made a lot of the moves I wanted to make.”

The highlight of the whole thing, for me, is what he said about Eli Manning, the quarterback he benched in a desperate attempt to save his job.

With the second pick in the draft, the Giants had the option of taking just about any signal caller they wanted this year, and there were all kinds of rumors and prognostications that they would find Manning’s successor with that pick. Instead, they opted for Penn State running back Saquon Barkley.

McAdoo approves of the decision to stick with Manning, the quarterback he “made immortal” by benching. It wasn’t exactly a ringing endorsement though, rather one of convenience. He just didn’t like the options for replacing the quarterback he wanted to replace.

“With the guys that came out this year, I’m not surprised they went the route they went by not drafting a guy. I wouldn’t have stood on the table to draft any quarterback No. 2 either.”

The whole interview is worth your time. He goes on to trash the offensive line, especially offensive tackle Ereck Flowers. Big Blue View has a lot more on McAdoo’s Giants’ insights too.

And what he has to say about the other three teams in the NFC East is pure hot take, including: “they got a bunch of guys getting in trouble all the time,” about the Cowboys. The Eagles not being able to adapt to success, and “Washington is Washing, right?”
