According to NFL rules, all 32 teams must trim their current rosters down to 53 players by the deadline, which is Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Here are the specific deadlines to monitor over the next few days ahead of the 2024 NFL season:
- 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 27: Teams must trim roster to 53 players
- 12:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Aug. 28: Deadline for claiming players who are subject to waivers.
- After 12:01 pm ET on Aug. 28: 17-man practice squads may be formed. Note: 17-man practice squads are available provided one player is an international player. Players with an international exemption do not count against the roster limit.
- After 4:01 pm ET on Aug. 28: Any player placed on Reserve/Injured, Reserve/Non-Football Injury or Illness, or Practice Squad; Injured during the regular season or postseason, may be designated for return later in the season, subject to the applicable procedures. The NFL has a new year regarding injured players for 2024: A maximum of two players who are placed on an applicable Reserve List on the business day of the final roster reduction can be designated for return.
