Kansas City Chiefs’ QB Patrick Mahomes is on the cusp of NFL immortality.
Tracking Patrick Mahomes’ performance in Super Bowl 59 vs. Eagles
Patrick Mahomes looks to complete the threepeat at Super Bowl 59. We’ll track his performance throughout the big game against the Eagles.
Already a three-time Super Bowl champion, two-time MVP, two-time All-Pro and leader of the generation of mutant QBs we’re currently in, Mahomes has the chance to etch his name into NFL history, being the first QB to three-peat as starting QB of the Super Bowl champions. Since becoming the starter for Andy Reid’s offense in 2018, Mahomes has done nothing but amaze, whether it be throwing 50 touchdowns in his first full season as a starter, or the miraculous scrambles to extend games, the Chiefs’ QB is always ready for the biggest moment.
However, in the last few seasons we’ve seen his game evolve as the NFL has evolved around Kansas City. With the amount of two-high shells that NFL defenses are throwing at Mahomes and other explosive NFL offenses, he had to change his game from being the uber explosive downfield passer to a more efficient, underneath QB. What resulted was Mahomes’ growth into one of the most efficient, buzzsaw QBs we’ve ever seen. His underrated development into this style of QB, taking what the defense is giving him until it’s time to become a superhero is what defines this new era of NFL QB’ing, and it’s kept the Chiefs at the top of the league for so much longer than believed. Kansas City isn’t nearly as explosive as previous teams, and with Joe Thuney moving from LG to LT the offensive line definitely isn’t as strong. However, you can’t count the Chiefs out, and it’s largely because of Mahomes. They’ve taken their offensive play to a higher level in the playoffs, because of course they did. In their win against the Bills, they put up over 30 points for the first time this season. Also in that game, Mahomes had an absurd 68% Success Rate as a passer.
Now, he goes against arguably the NFL’s best defense in the Philadelphia Eagles, designed to take away explosives and force you to eat your vegetables underneath. The last time these two danced in this game, Mahomes led the Chiefs to the win on a bum ankle.
Can Mahomes and Kansas City deny another team a Super Bowl victory and go where no other team has gone before? Follow along with his Super Bowl highlights.
First quarter
It was tough sledding for the Chiefs and Mahomes in the first quarter, ending up running for his life for most of the quarter. He ended the first quarter going 3-6 for 17 yards.
Second quarter
Mahomes has made his first major mistake in this playoff run. After two sacks by the Eagles’ defensive line, the Chiefs roll Mahomes out and he throws it directly to Eagles’ CB Cooper DeJean. Next thing you know, the Eagles are up 17-0 after Mahomes’ pick-six. The Chiefs need to find answers yesterday because it’s looking bad.
Mahomes threw another interception due to pressure, and this one is getting ugly. It’s going to be really hard to come back from down 24 with the QB looking like this.
Third quarter
The third quarter saw Mahomes finally hit a couple of big plays, but this game is well out of hand. Mahomes scrambled and threw a touchdown to WR Xavier Worthy, but after a missed 2 point conversion the score is 34-6.
Fourth quarter
