With the Philadelphia Eagles leading the Kansas City Chiefs 17-0 just before halftime of Super Bowl LIX, the Chiefs took over deep in their own territory. Patrick Mahomes and company had a chance to double-dip, as they deferred the coin toss and are set to receive the second-half kickoff.
But in the blink of an eye, the Eagles offense was coming back on the field.
Mahomes tried to connect with Hollywood Brown on a throw over the middle of the field, after first opening to the left side of the formation. But diving in front of the throw was none other than Baun, whose interception gifted the Eagles incredible field position:
As you can see from this replay angle, the play begins with the pressure up front. Josh Sweat, working against left tackle Joe Thuney, collapses the edge of the pocket and puts Mahomes under duress. The quarterback’s throw under pressure is low and off-target, and Baun makes the diving interception:
Baun is perhaps the best defensive signing of the past offseason. Used primarily as a pass rusher by the New Orleans Saints since they drafted him, Baun was shifted into an off-ball role by Vic Fangio after signing with Philadelphia.
That move has certainly paid off, as Baun earned first-team All-Pro honors for the first time in his career this past season.
And he might pick up his first Super Bowl ring as well if he keeps making plays like this.
