Laremy Tunsil trades grades for Commanders and Texans after Washington lands franchise LT

Let’s grade the surprising Laremy Tunsil trade for both sides.

In another shocking deal, the Houston Texans are trading left tackle Laremy Tunsil to the Washington Commanders for a bevy of picks. Starting with the Commanders’ 3rd round pick and 7th round pick this year, Washington also trades their 2nd and 4th round pick in 2026. Houston also tags on a 4th round pick this year to send with Tunsil to DC.

How does each team grade out in this trade? We’ll break it down for you.

Houston Texans: C-

I’m just confused on what the Texans’ process is here. Yes, Tunsil was coming up on an extension and had a down year last season, but he’s done more than enough to convince Houston that it was just a blip on the radar. Now, going into a pivotal year for the Texans and QB CJ Stroud, Houston has a massive hole at left tackle, as well as both guard spots and center. They already let RG Shaq Mason go in free agency and none of the guys they currently have are quality on the interior, so how do they go about adding to this roster so they can continue to win right now? Can they do it before Stroud gets really expensive as well?

This just is really baffling work by the Texans, something that feels like bad process. The only thing saving this trade is getting a boatload of picks back.

Washington Commanders: A-

What a way to shore up a hole. While Brandon Coleman played well in spurts at left tackle, Tunsil allows them to move Coleman inside to guard, where he might be best. Tunsil is still one of the best pass protectors in the entire league at the position and has enough quality moments still left in the tank. The only reason this doesn’t get full marks for an A is because they gave up a lot of picks, but even those picks seem really low risk. A bunch of second and fourth round picks doesn’t seem too bad, and with a rookie QB ready to win now the bet is that those picks won’t be early.

Washington has been busy this offseason, but this has been my favorite move of theirs.
