At this rate, the Atlanta Thrashers may never feel an urge to switch Dustin Byfuglien's position from defenseman to forward. The versatile 25-year-old, who inflicted plenty of damage in and around the crease for the Chicago Blackhawks' Stanley Cup pursuit, has been firing on all cylinders for Atlanta.
VIDEO: Dustin Byfuglien Is Untouchable
Byfuglien is one of the highest-scoring rearguards in the league after ten contests, averaging over 21 minutes of ice time and making the Thrashers' powerplay much more threatening. He notched an assist and a spectacular overtime marker to his credit yesterday, his third game-winner of the year. Jeremy Roenick had some choice words for Byfuglien's utilization as a rearguard and not a power forward.
“That might be the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard in my life. Dustin Byfuglien as a defenseman. I would love to play against Dustin Byfuglien as a defenseman. I would turn him inside out, left, right and center every single time. This kid, he made his living in front of the net scoring goals during the playoffs for the Chicago Blackhawks. Why on earth would you put him back as a defenseman?”
That’s why.
