A little more than 12 hours after collapsing on the ice during the Atlanta Thrashers' 4-2 season-opening win over the Washington Capitals, Thrashers goalie Ondrej Pavelec has been diagnosed with a concussion.
Atlanta Thrashers Goalie Ondrej Pavelec Has Concussion, Remains Hospitalized
According to a report from Chris Vivlamore in the Atlanta Journal Constitution this afternoon, doctors diagnosed the goalie with a concussion:
It is likely that the concussion was the result of his fall, but nothing is certain at this point. Doctors are most likely still trying to find the cause of the collapse.
Pavelec was alert and responsive after arriving at the hospital. He told me that he is feeling better in a text message early Saturday morning.
The Thrashers recalled goalie Drew MacIntyre from Chicago of the AHL to take Pavelec's roster spot. MacIntyre, 27, has played in just two NHL games, the last coming for Vancouver in the 2007-08 season. But, Chris Mason, Pavelec's backup, will start for Atlanta against the Lightning.
