As the Florida Panthers closed out a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Friday, Steve Bernier delivered a hip check on Brent Burns in the final seconds. Upset with the hit, the defenseman retaliated after the game with more force than he perhaps intended.

↵Insisting the butt-end was unintentional, Burns ended up breaking Bernier’s orbital bone.
↵↵“I don’t know how it happened. I saw he was bleeding,” Burns told reporters following the game. “He just came at me, and maybe my glove got him, I don’t know.”
↵↵The 25-year-old had his NHL hearing earlier today, and all he can do is sit tight and wait for the decision. An injury and drawn blood resulting from the incident doesn’t bode well for Burns, in addition to it occurring following the contest.
