Dany Heatley returned to Ottawa on Thursday night for the first time since demanding a trade and giving a big fat middle finger to the entire city over a year ago.
Dany Heatley Returns To Ottawa, Fans Don’t Exactly Applaud Him
His San Jose Sharks were propelled to a 4-0 victory by a different former Ottawa standout: junior hockey star Logan Couture, who scored two goals in his first-ever professional game in town, but the story was all Heatley, all the time last night at Scotiabank Place. As you might expect, the fans didn't exactly applaud No. 15.
A collection of the best Ottawa had to offer on Thursday night, if you’ll join us after the jump.
Earlier in the day, Ottawa radio put together a little ode to Heatley... to the tune of Cee Lo Green’s “F*ck You.”
Fans filed into the arena earlier than usual (although, pathetically, the place came about 1,000 to 2,000 fans short of a sell out) and had their way with some old Heatley merch.
And of course, they brought the signs...
Booing, chanting. “Traitor! Heatley sucks!” Burning jerseys outside the arena. Heatley action figures in the urinals. The signs. The jerseys on the ice. Ahhh, catharsis. Thanks to this new era of Internet and video and what-not, here are some moving pictures of that scene.
See that at the end there? Heatley running off to the locker room instead of jumping on the ice with his teammates? He didn’t address that specifically, but he did chat after the game with TSN:
Who knows if Ottawa fans will move on now, but they better. They have bigger things to worry about.
The sad thing, at least from my perspective? If the Senators continue to struggle as they are, and there seems to be little reason to expect otherwise, tonight may very well end up as the biggest game for the team. And it was an opportunity devastatingly lost.
