Early on in tonight’s game between the Flyers and Canadiens, fans who like the rough stuff are already disappointed that this will be the last tilt of the year between the two clubs. On the first shift, just six second into the game, P.K. Subban had words with Mike Richards.
Canadiens Vs. Flyers: Dan Carcillo, P.K. Subban And Mike Richards Exchange Early Words
Richards called out Subban in the media after the team’s met in Montreal earlier this season, so there’s clearly a history there. Richards’ linemate, Dan Carcillo, got in Subban’s face as well on the play. Subban’s been booed every time he’s touched the puck tonight in Philadelphia.
A few minutes after the initial incident, Scott Gomez of the Canadiens cross-checked Carcillo in the back in front of the Flyers bench. There’s no doubt that No. 13 in orange embellished a little bit as he went down to the ice, but as the penalty was called on the play, Gomez threw the puck at Carcillo, who was still on the ice. The Versus’ cameras apparently didn’t pick that up, and neither did the eyes of the officials.
The Flyers didn’t like it too much, though, and Carcillo jumped on the chance to go after Gomez. Chris Pronger and Blair Betts also jumped in, but Carcillo picked up the only roughing penalty.
This game will be fun. These teams hate each other, and really, it might be one of the most underrated rivalries in the NHL.
