The Flyers haven’t been a very good power play team this season, but judging only by the first period, you wouldn’t really know that. Then again, when you add a ton of emotion into the mix and your hated opponent takes three penalties in 91 seconds, it gives you plenty of reason to capitalize.
Canadiens Vs. Flyers: Philadelphia Takes 2-0 Lead Thanks To Undisciplined Habs
The home team did just that in the first period. Andrej Kostitsyn went to the box for slashing at the 16:03 mark of the first, and 1:11 later, teammate Jaroslav Spacek joined him with a holding call. The Flyers couldn’t capitalize immediately, but when P.K. Subban, who the Flyers quite frankly can’t stand, took a penalty for slashing Danny Briere 20 seconds later, that was all they needed.
The fans laughed as Subban skated to the box, and nine seconds later, the laughs turned to cheers as Jeff Carter re-directed a shot in front of Carey Price and into the back of the net. 1-0, and the Flyers were still privy to a 5-on-3 edge.
1:03 later, and the Flyers still up two men, Kimmo Timonen blasted a shot from the point that beat Price cleanly. That’s where we stand now after one period. Philadelphia’s up two, flying high on emotion. Meanwhile, Montreal’s going to have to find a way to rein in their own emotion, because it’s clearly out of control.
