The concussion debate still rages around the NHL, but really, as the media and league executives have talked about the issue over and and over again, how much opinion have we really picked up from the players?
Brooks Laich Doesn’t Want A Babysitter
Brooks Laich, in particular, is sick of all the debate. He wants us to quit babying NHL players on the subject. (Yep, his words... not ours.)
“I really don’t care about that awareness crap to be honest, I’m sick of hearing all this talk about concussions and the quiet room,” Laich said. “This is what we love to do, guys love to play, they love to compete they want to be on the ice. How do you take that away from somebody?
”We accept that there’s going to be dangers when we play this game and you know that every night you get dressed,“Laich continued. “Sometimes it feels like we’re being babysat a little too much. We’re grown men, we should have a little say in what we want to do.”
While everybody that’s been engaged in the debate certainly has the best interest of the players in mind, Laich does make a solid point. There’s always going to be risk in any sport, especially one as fast-paced and hard hitting as hockey, and trying to eliminate all of that risk is never an effort in futility.
