The Winnipeg Jets and the Toronto Maple Leafs enjoy hockey so much that both teams decided to not only play an overtime period but to also engage in a shootout to determine the winner. The Jets, which had entered this game following its first win of the season, came up short, falling, 4-3 (2-0), on Thursday night.
Jets Vs. Maple Leafs Score: Toronto Defeats Winnipeg, 4-3, Following Shootout
The Jets entered the third period of play with a 3-1 lead on goals by Tobias Enstrom, Alexander Burmistrov and Mark Scheifele. However, the Leafs answered back with two goals in the span of less than 30 seconds in the final frame of regulations. Joffrey Lupul, who netted the first Leafs goal, came up with a power play goal in a 5-on-3 situation at 7:28 in the period. Phil Kessel came up with the game-tying goal 27 seconds later while on a 5-on-4 advantage.
After the teams failed to score in overtime, Lupul came up with the first goal of the shootout. After the Jets failed to score on the third shot, Toronto rookie Matt Frattin put the puck past Ondrej Pavelec for the victory.
Pavelec stopped 20-of-23 shots in regulation while his teammates were able to put up 29 shots on Toronto’s James Reimer. But the latter allowed three goals and nothing more.
The Leafs, who previously lost to the Colorado Avalanche in overtime, are still undefeated in regulation.
