Make that two Southeast Division coaches fired on Monday. The Carolina Hurricanes have parted ways with head coach Paul Maurice, just hours after the Washington Capitals fired coach Bruce Boudreau.
Paul Maurice Fired By Carolina Hurricanes; Kirk Muller To Be Named Replacement?
Paul Maurice is out yet again as head coach of the Carolina Hurricanes. He was fired Monday by the team, and it looks as though Kirk Muller will be taking his job.
There’s no word from the team on who Maurice’s replacement will be, but it looks as though Kirk Muller could be the man, if you’re to believe the report from TSN. Muller played 19 seasons in the NHL before retiring in 2003, and he was hired in 2006 to his first professional coaching gig.
He served as an assistant coach with the Montreal Canadiens for five seasons before taking a job in the Nashville Predators organization this past summer. He's currently in his first season as coach of the Preds' AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals. The Admirals sit in third place in their division with a 10-6-0-1 record.
Maurice, who was in his second stint as head coach of the Hurricanes, probably saw the writing on the wall. His team, which missed the playoffs by just two points a season ago and had hoped to build upon that this year, completely fell off the map early on. They’ve stumbled to an 8-13-4 record thus far, making them the fifth-worst team in the NHL and the second-worst in the Eastern Conference.
