Two of the NHL's hottest starting teams have both fallen on hard times recently as they get ready to face off in Detroit on Tuesday. After the Colorado Avalanche opened 5-1-0, they have 2-5-1. The Detroit Red Wings have followed up a 5-0-0 start with a six-game losing streak that only ended with Saturday's 5-0 win over the Anaheim Ducks.
Avalanche Vs. Red Wings Preview: Game Time, TV Coverage And More
Avalanche and Red Wings have both slowed considerably after fast starts heading into Tuesday’s match at Joe Louis Arena.
In the Avalanche’s case, at least, it seems to have been more a product of some bad habits catching up with them. In four of the Avs’ first six wins of the season, they needed overtime or a shootout to pull out the two points. They had allowed 20 goals in those first eight games and have only gotten worse since, allowing 22 in their last six.
The Red Wings' recent decline may have been a little harder to see coming, but it has been no less dramatic. Detroit has allowed 22 goals in their past seven, with normally reliable Jimmy Howard between the pipes in five of those games.
