The 2011 edition of HBO's 24/7 series dedicated to the two NHL teams participating in the league's Winter Classic — this season, the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers — opened to lower ratings than the 2010 iteration. The premiere of 24/7 Rangers/Flyers: Road to the NHL Winter Classic garnered 284,000 viewers last Wednesday, down from 383,000 viewers for the premiere episode of the 2010 series that focused on the Pittsburgh Penguins and Washington Capitals.
HBO 24/7 Flyers-Rangers Ratings Fall From 2011 Show, But Still Not Bad
That’s not bad in terms of HBO’s viewership, according to Puck the Media’s Steve Lepore — other original programming on the cable channel during the week, like Englightened and the recently cancelled Bored to Death, can draw even fewer viewers. If the NHL and HBO are likely to worry about anything pertaining to 24/7’s ratings, it will likely be the year-to-year dropoff, despite the teams being from the larger New York and Philadelphia media markets.
