Winter Classic Alumni Game 2012: Flyers Win Bragging Rights, 3-1

Versus’ crew named Bernie Parent, Eric Lindros, and Mark LaForest its three stars of the game. Parent, the legendary 66-year-old Flyers goalie, played for just five minutes, but did not allow a goal, and sprawled to make one memorable save. Lindros assisted on LeClair’s goal, and LaForest made a number of saves in relief of Parent.

It’s a beautiful thing. As is the ballpark, which has been transformed into an orange mob that looks a whole lot like hockey heaven. More than 45,000 people turned out for the event, which will now almost certainly be an annual tradition that’s just as big as the Winter Classic itself. Fans were decked out in all kinds of old jerseys, with the most popular coming with a big No. 88 on the back.

We walked around the park during the second period of the game and took in the scene. Now, we’ll share it with you as best we can.

PHILADELPHIA -- The 2012 NHL Winter Classic Alumni Game is here, and just about everything about it is a little bizarre. It’s about 50 degrees at 3 p.m. in Philadelphia, and while the ice was covered until warmups.

It feels like Opening Day for the Phillies... minus the whole ice rink on the field and orange, not red, in the stands thing. The teams aren’t decked out in the jerseys that’ll be worn in the Winter Classic come Monday afternoon. Instead, they’re wearing the everyday jerseys for their team.
