Goalie fights are pretty en vogue today, what with Brent Johnson's one punch KO of Rick DiPietro last night. There's one other bit in the news today as well that reminds us of fantastic goalie fights, too -- the pending return of goaltender Ray Emery.
Rick DiPietro Vs. Brent Johnson Inspires Us To Look At Hockey’s Best Goalie Fights
During his short time in Philadelphia, Emery’s mask featured the visage of Rocky Balboa and Bernard Hopkins. During his time in Ottawa, the Sens rejected a mask of his that featured Mike Tyson, so he had to settle for Muhammad Ali, George Chuvalo and Floyd Mayweather instead. It’s safe to say Emery likes fighting.
So as we compile this list of some of the all-time best goalie fights, it's appropriate that we start with Razor Ray's take down of then-Buffalo Sabre Martin Biron from back in 2007.
More favorites after the jump.
We’re going to stick with Emery here for a second, but this one doesn’t make our cut because of him. As the announcer says, it probably all started because of Emery, but really -- FLYING GOALIE!
From 2003 between the Binghamton Senators and the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL, watch for Neil Little of the Phantoms (not that you’ll miss him).
Sticking with the Flyers organization, here’s Ron Hextall, a guy also known for his toughness, throwing ‘em with Toronto’s Felix Potvin back in 1996.
During the height of the rivalry between the Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings back in 1997, this one happened between Patrick Roy and Mike Vernon.
But really, that's not even the best fight of Patrick Roy's career or the rivalry between these two clubs. That honor would have to go to Roy and Chris Osgood of the Wings a year later in April 1998.
