The Detroit Red Wings began overtime on the wrong foot as Justin Abdelkader was sent to the box for a high-sticking penalty after catching Niclas Wallinin the face, resulting in a four-minute double-minor. Just a few minutes into overtime, the Red Wings were down a man and in deep trouble against the San Jose Sharks in Game 1. But the Red Wings survived the penalty, only to give up the game-winning goal just seconds after the penalty ended as Benn Ferriero buried a shot to give the Sharks a 2-1 win.
Red Wings Vs. Sharks Final Score: Benn Ferriero’s Overtime Goal Gives San Jose 2-1 Win
With both sides at full-strength, Ferriero stole the puck back in the Wings’ zone, unleashed a wrist-shot and beat Jimmy Howard through the five-hole. The shot appeared to deflect off a stick on the way to the net, but just had enough on it to get past Howard. Logan Couture and Dan Boyle were credited with the assists.
The Red Wings took the early lead in the first period Nicklas Lidstrom’s goal. The Sharks were able to answer in the third period on Joe Pavelski’s game-tying goal and the 1-1 tie held as Game 1 headed to overtime. Ferriero finished it off, capping what may have been a perfect birthday.
With the win, the Sharks took a 1-0 series lead. Game 2 is scheduled for Sunday in San Jose.
