The Boston Bruins barely escaped the first round against the Montreal Canadiens, mostly because their top line of Nathan Horton, David Krejci and Milan Lucic failed to do much of anything offensively.
Bruins Vs. Flyers, Game 1: Boston’s Top Line Scores Twice In First; B’s Lead, 2-1
If the first period of Game 1 of their second round series against the Philadelphia Flyers is any indication, that tide may turn. Horton and Krejci each scored -- one early in the period, one in the final minute -- to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead over the Flyers after 20 minutes of play. Danny Briere scored at the 11:02 mark to tie the score at 1-1.
Before you think about blaming the Flyers goaltending, know that it wasn’t exactly Brian Boucher’s fault on either goal. The Flyers got caught napping defensively on each goal, allowing the Bruins plenty of room to waltz into the crease and pick up second chance opportunities.
Peter Laviolette has matched Ville Leino, Briere and Scott Hartnell up against that Bruins top line so far, but he’ll likely change that up as the second period begins. Conversely, though, that matchup did work in the Flyers favor on Briere’s goal, as Horton was caught sleeping near Tim Thomas’ crease. Briere was able to step in front, receive a pass from Braydon Coburn and dance around Thomas for the goal.
Still lots of hockey to be played here at Wells Fargo Center on this Saturday afternoon.
