Frozen Four 2011, NCAA Championship Game: Michigan, Minnesota-Duluth Head For Overtime

Man, these kids are gassed, and they’re going to have to play until someone scores. The last 10 minutes of the third period of the 2011 NCAA men’s hockey final between Michigan and Minnesota-Duluth was a battle of a large group of young men against their own bodies, and despite the lack of a goal in the third period, they’re winning. It’s been an absolutely fantastic finale to the Frozen Four, and overtime is exactly what this game deserves.

It was 2-2 at the end of the second period and the score is still 2-2. Though, the scoreless second period was more about tired legs, bad luck, and hard work on defense than an actual lack of chances. UMD has had an incredible nine power plays on the night, but only one power play goal. Michigan haven’t played a particularly smart game, but they’ve made up for their mistakes with effort, and as a result, they’re going to overtime against a team who probably should have scored five or six goals on them.

For more on the game, be sure to check in with SB Nation Minnesota. Nathan Wells is at the Xcel Energy Center covering the game live.
