Frozen Four 2011: Minnesota-Duluth Hockey Takes Overtime Win, 3-2

The Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs were the better team on the box score all night, but the Michigan Wolverines were still able to take them to overtime in the 2011 Frozen Four final. In the end, UMD were too much for Michigan to hold off, though, and Kyle Schmidt scored his 11th goal of the season late in overtime to give his team a win by the score of 3-2.

Travis Oleksuk and Brady Lamb assisted the game winner, capping off a great performance for both of them. UMD put 38 shots on goal on the night to Michigan’s 24 and had nine power play opportunities to Michigan’s four, while winning a wide majority of the faceoffs on the night. Their win was well deserved, and it gives UMD their first ever national title. They also hold the interesting distinction of being one of the only teams to win a hockey and a football national championship in the same season, as the Bulldogs won the Division II football title this year.
