The San Jose Sharks needed to come out firing to gain some momentum in this series against the Canucks and they did that with a three goal first period. They lead the Canucks 3-0 after the first twenty minutes.
Canucks Vs. Sharks, Game 3: San Jose Steps Out To 3-0 Lead With Two Patrick Marleau Goals
Before the Sharks started this game, they made the announcement that the focus of Game 2, he of twenty penalty minutes and five minor penalties, Ben Eager, would be out of the lineup replaced by Jamie McGinn. While Eager did score a goal, his antics against the Canucks in Game 2 pretty much forced coach Todd McClellan to sit him for Game 3.
The Sharks got the first power play of the game two minutes into the game as Maxim Lapierre took a roughing penalty for leaving his feet on a check of Ian White. When the Sharks go on the power play, it has been automatic for them as they have scored on their fourth straight powerplay in this series. Patrick Marleau scores the powerplay goal as he redirects a pass from behind the net by Joe Thornton past Roberto Luongo.
The Canucks continued their parade to the penalty box with Christian Ehrhoff taking a four minute double minor for high sticking Torrey Mitchell in the face. The call was a stark contrast from Game 2 where the referees there missed a high sticking call that occurred on Joe Thornton. The Sharks made the Canucks pay as Ryan Clowe scored within the first two minutes of the Ehrhoff penalty. He redirected a shot on goal in front of the net as Luongo was down to stop the intial shot. The Canucks did manage to kill their first penalty with the second half of the Ehrhoff double minor as the Sharks are now five for six in the series on the powerplay.
Patrick Marleau scores his second goal of the period on a breakaway as he just wrists the puck over the glove of Roberto Luongo. Joe Thornton created the turnover at center ice and fed the puck to Marleau as he was skating up ice.
The Sharks offense has been dominant all period as they outshot the Canucks 16-7 in the period. At one point in the period, the Sharks were outshooting the Canucks 15-1 before the Canucks could start to gather some offensive momentum at the end of the period. Seven of the 16 Sharks shots came on the power play.
