The Detroit Red Wings have put themselves in a whole early in Game 5 of their Western Conference Quarterfinal series with the San Jose Sharks, who can eliminate them with a victory. They were out-shot, out-hit and out-chanced by the Sharks in that first period, and a late goal by Devin Setoguchi made it 1-0 San Jose after 20 minutes at HP Pavilion in San Jose.
Red Wings Vs. Sharks, Game 5: Setoguchi Puts San Jose Up 1-0 Late In First Period
The Red Wings took three penalties in the first period, two of them resulting in unsuccessful San Jose power plays. But the Sharks began the period with an 8-2 shot advantage, one that didn’t get much better, as San Jose bested the Wings in shots 15-7 through one period.
San Jose finally broke through late in the frame when Dan Boyle let one go from the point. Devin Setoguchi re-directed it on the way and it went past Jimmy Howard to make it 1-0 San Jose at 17:18. It was Setoguchi’s fifth goal of the post-season, while Boyle and Thornton set it up to get their seventh and eighth assists of the playoffs, respectively.
Late in the period there was controversy when Johan Franzen went off for slashing, while Joe Thornton was called for a dive on the play. Franzen was complaining to the refs that the Sharks were targeting his injured ankle. The fire burns with fury in this rivalry, and will likely get even worse as this one goes on.
