Tough birthday for Philadelphia Flyers wing Tom Sestito today.

Sestito has been suspended the rest of the preseason and the first two regular-season NHL games this season after a hit from behind on New York Rangers forward Andre Deveaux.

Rangers head coach John Tortorella said that the hit was worse than the one Jody Shelley delivered and received a much stiffer suspension for.

Flyers blog Broad Street Hockey thinks Sestito should consider himself lucky he wasn’t punished more severely.

In reality, Sestito should probably feel lucky. He was only suspended four games for the hit, one that was much worse than the hit that earned Jody Shelley a 10 game ban last week. The fact that Shelley is considered a repeat offender and Sestito is not certainly played into each decision, but the fact still remains: Tommy got off easy here.

To add insult to the injury he caused, Sestito was placed on waivers by the Flyers. He went unclaimed and was sent down to the Adirondack Phantoms of the AHL on Wednesday. The minor league will review the suspension and might end up enforcing it on their end as well.
