Tomas Vokoun has had an interesting season with the Washington Capitals to say the least. In his first game, he allowed five goals in a 6-5 shootout win over the Tampa Bay Lightning. After that game, he allowed two goals or less in six straight starts.
Penguins Vs. Capitals: Tomas Vokoun Continues To Settle In With 30-Save Shutout
Later in the season, he allowed three or more goals in six of nine starts from mid-November to mid-December. Vokoun then sat on the bench for two weeks in favor of Michal Neuvirth. Since starting December 28 against the New York Rangers, Vokoun has been on a roll, having won five of seven starts, including Wednesday's 30-save shutout in a 1-0 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Minus two rough games on the Caps’ recent road trip (he allowed eight goals on 65 shots), Vokoun has allowed only five games in his five other starts. Wednesday was his second shutout of the season and first since October 18.
Vokoun was a cheap acquisition this summer, signing for $1.5 million, but his play is worth much more to the Caps.
"He was outstanding," Matt Hendricks said of Vokoun. "He made all the good saves he had to make, but when we needed him to make that great save, he was there as well. Hats off to Tomas."
