Winter Classic 2012 Score: Rangers, Flyers Scoreless After First Period Thanks To Henrik Lundqvist

Henrik Lundqvist has been the star of the first period at the 2012 NHL Winter Classic between the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers, making several key saves to keep the Flyers off the board. Early in the first period, he made a crucial save on a Claude Giroux breakaway, and a few minutes later he stopped a Kimmo Timonen blast with a beauty of a glove save.

Then, with a few minutes remaining in the period, ex-Ranger and future Hall of Famer Jaromir Jagr broke in on net much like he did to Giroux, turned aside the Flyers scoring chance.

The Flyers have done a good job of getting pucks on Lundqvist, but the Rangers defense has done a better job of clearing rebounds and not allowing the Flyers to set up body position in front of their goaltender. Each team killed a penalty in the first period, and the Flyers outshot the Rangers by a total of 12 to nine in the first period.
