NHL Skills Competition 2012: Patrick Kane Wears Superman Cape And Wins Breakaway Challenge

The breakaway challenge is one of the highlights of the NHL's skills competition, as the league's best inject some out-of-the-box creativity and look to put on a show. Brian Elliott and Carey Price were the goalies selected to for the thankless task of stopping some of the NHL's most explosive players.

Ryan Johansen missed the first shot for Team Chara, as he went between the legs but was a little strong with a backhand. Sean Coutourier, another rookie, missed his shot after juggling the puck on his stick. Johansen was strong on his second attempt but Coutourier's second attempt was dazzling as he brought the puck with him, poked it back and spun around to beat Price.

Corey Perry was the first to score a goal, after taking the puck down the ice on his stick, and spinning it around as if he were playing lacrosse. Perry dropped it in front of the crease and flipped a backhand past Elliott. Perry then scored on his final attempt with a mini-goalie stick, which he took out from under his sweater while approaching the net.

Patrick Kane stole the show with his second attempt, as teammate Marian Hossa brought out a Superman cape and Clark Kent glasses. Kane went down to the ice, mimicking Superman flying through the air and beat Elliott with his stick extended across the crease. In his third attempt, Kane tricked Elliott with an exploding puck (h/t/ @BubbaProg)

Throughout the event, the goalies took part in the creativity, as Price defended one shot backwards while “Tebowing” to block the net on another.

The winner was determined by a fan vote by text message, and Kane’s superman shot took home the breakaway challenge.
