Hurricane Sandy has closed the NHL’s headquarters in New York City, according to a report from RDS. The league’s Midtown offices will be shuttered Monday and Tuesday as the storm pounds the East Coast, and the closing could impact the ongoing collective bargaining agreement talks.

Reports on Friday indicated that the league was planning to cancel the Winter Classic and All-Star Game this Monday, but that rumor was quickly shot down by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly. Nevertheless, the NHL owes the University of Michigan a $250,000 payment by Nov. 2 for use of Michigan Stadium during the Winter Classic. If there’s no progress in CBA talks by then, the NHL will almost certainly cancel the game before that payment is due.
Talks between the NHL and NHLPA have not been scheduled this week as of yet, either in New York or at union headquarters in Toronto.
With the league’s offices closed during what should be a crucial week of talks, the NHL lockout could be extended even longer, and two of the league’s marquee events could become direct casualties.
