Marek Tvrdon, a minor league prospect in the Detroit Red Wings organization who was leading the Western Hockey League's Vancouver Giants in scoring this season, had successful surgery to remove a blockage in a vein in his shoulder Thursday. The procedure will keep Tvrdon out until next season.

“Marek is under the excellent care of numerous specialists and he is recovering quickly,” said Scott Bonner, Vancouver’s general manager, in a statement. “He will not be returning this season but he is expected to have a full recovery and future career as a hockey player. Right now our priority is Marek’s health and well-being and we would like to respect his and his family’s privacy.”
Tvrdon, 19, reportedly felt pain in the shoulder during warmups Sunday and was scratched from the lineup with what the team said at the time was an infection in his arm.
He was picked in the fourth round by the Red Wings in 2011. He had eight goals and 14 assists in 22 games this season.
