The NHL lockout was Canada’s immediate gain in their 2013 World Junior Championship opener on Wednesday morning, as two NHLers led the way in a 9-3 romp of Germany.

Ryan-Nugent Hopkins had five points and Mark Scheifele had two goals on six shots as the Canadians rolled to victory over the Germans in their 2013 WJC opener.
Edmonton's Ryan-Nugent Hopkins had a goal and four assists in the victory to lead all scorers, while Winnipeg's Mark Scheifele had two goals to pace the Canadiens to victory. RNH played 62 games as a rookie in the NHL a season ago and would not have been on Canada's roster if not for Gary Bettman's third lockout. The same could be said for Scheifele, who played seven games in Winnipeg last year before being sent to Barrie for a final year of junior seasoning. Scheifele led all forwards with six shots on goal in the win Wednesday.
In all, 13 players factored in on the final scoresheet. Goaltender Malcolm Subban made 25 saves on 28 shots, and that number of shots allowed is a point of concern for Canadian fans given the weak German club they faced in the opener.

Canada is back in action on Friday at 4:30 a.m. ET in game two of preliminary round play against Slovakia. The Germans are back in action Thursday at 9 a.m. ET against the United States.
