Perhaps they're just testing the waters, but the Buffalo Sabres are reportedly asking for a first-round draft pick in exchange for forward Paul Gaustad. Yes, that's the same Paul Gaustad who has 17 points and a $2.3 million contract that expires at the end of the season.
NHL Trade Rumors: Buffalo Sabres Want First-Round Pick For Paul Gaustad
Gaustad has a lot of strong tools. He’s good in the faceoff circle, he can play any forward position and is good on the defensive side of the puck. But a first-rounder for him? Yeah, that’s asking quite a bit. Via Die By The Blade:
While the asking price might seem rather ridiculous, it could very well happen depending on how much interest there is out there for a player like Gaustad. There are teams like Detroit and San Jose that could be interested in Gaustad. Detroit already used their 1st round pick in the Kyle Quincey deal, but there are good handful of teams that have interest so that return could very well happen.
The likelihood of getting the return doesn’t seem all that high, but you can’t blame Darcy Regier for asking.
