Graham James, a former junior Canadian hockey coach, has been sentenced to two years in prison for sexually assaulting two former players. He pleaded guilty to the charges brought up by Todd Holt and former Calgary Flames star Theo Fleury. Both were sexually assaulted hundreds of times over the course of several years as teenagers. Holt spoke out after the sentencing, calling the two-year penalty "a national travesty."
Graham James, Former Hockey Coach, Sentenced To 2 Years In Prison For Molesting Players
Former junior Canadian hockey coach Graham James has been sentenced to two years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting former players Todd Holt and Theo Fleury when they were teenagers.
“This sentence today is nothing short of a national travesty because we know that childhood abuse has reached epidemic proportions in our country,” Holt said in a statement.
“Graham James is laughing all the way back to the life he has always led, knowing that justice for him is but a blip on the radar.”
James has been convicted three times now for sexual assault against teenage boys. He served 20 months in prison after pleading guilty in 1997 to assaulting two other former players, including former NHL journeyman Sheldon Kennedy. Judge Catherine Carlson didn’t give James the six-year sentence many had hoped for, citing the “extreme degree of humiliation” he has already experienced as well as his demonstrated remorse.
