Flyers Vs. Penguins, NHL Playoffs 2012 Game 3: Teams Trade Goals In Second, Philly Still Leads

All right, fine. You’re going to have to wait until after this Game 3 between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins to catch your breath. The 20-minute intermission is not enough time to relax.

It wasn’t nearly as physical in the second period as the teams began to settle in and play a bit of hockey, and that probably makes sense: The Flyers are concerned with protecting their lead and the Penguins are concerned with trying to avoid a 3-0 series deficit. Both teams kinda sorta reached their goals.

Pittsburgh was able to cut the Philadelphia lead to just a goal on two separate occasions. James Neal scored a power play goal at 10:31 to make it 4-3 Philly, but Matt Read answered moments later to open up the lead once more. Jordan Staal scored to make it 5-4, and then in the final minute of the second period, Wayne Simmonds scored on the power play to give the Flyers the 6-4 lead heading into the third period.

There’s one constant in this game and this series: Goaltending and defense are non-existant. That’s the only thing we can count on. Luckily for the Penguins, that means a two-goal hill is not insurmountable in the third period.
