Anaheim Ducks center Saku Koivu finished up his third season with the team, finishing up the 2011-2012 season with 38 points. The two sides have come to an agreement on a new one-year contract extension, the team announced.

“Saku is a character player and someone we really wanted to keep,” Ducks Executive VP/GM Bob Murray said in a team release. “We need three strong lines next season that can produce, and Saku will be a part of that.”

The one-year extension is reportedly worth $3 million and potentially more with bonuses.

Koivu has played 16 seasons in the NHL, the first 13 with the Montreal Canadiens.

"I'm really happy about it," Koivu said in a conference call with the media. "For both sides, it's a positive thing that we got it done at this point. I don't have to worry about it and think about what is going to happen for next year. From the team's perspective, getting into the summer and the free agent market, knowing that I am going to be back is probably going to make their plan a little less complicated and a bit easier to approach."
