Capitals Vs. Rangers, 2012 NHL Playoffs: Intense Second Period Nets No Goals, N.Y. Still Leads 1-0

Intensity goes without saying in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and a Game 7 only amplifies every movement, every shot, every save. In the second period, fans had trouble getting off the edges of their seats. Though the New York Rangers scored early in the first period, one could argue the second was far more exciting, with both teams having opportunity after opportunity to score but goalies Henrik Lundqvist and the Washington Capitals' Braden Holtby conducting masterpieces in the nets.

In fact, the goalie duel is so even that Lunqvist and Holtby have 19 saves apiece to this point. There have been 39 shots between the two teams, including many on rebounds and second efforts, but the goalies have been simply outstanding. There were some jaw dropping moments in the second period. Of course, that’s how it’s been all series.

The period was a complete dead heat. There were no penalties, no goals and each team had its stretches of dominating the puck to no avail. The Caps likely need a power play to break through against Lundqvist, but regardless, the third period figures to be among the best 20 minutes of hockey this season.
