Randy Cunneyworth Out As Montreal Canadiens Head Coach, Will Remain As Assistant

In a move that literally everybody could have seen coming, Randy Cunneyworth is no longer the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens. Newly-minted general manager Marc Bergevin announced in his introductory press conference on Wednesday afternoon that Cunneyworth will stay on as an assistant coach for the time being, but that his ultimate fate with the club will be decided by whoever Bergevin pegs as the next head coach.

Cunneyworth was a midseason hire for the Habs last season, promoted from the head position at Montreal’s AHL affiliate in Hamilton. He took over for Jacques Martin and was immediately chastised by the community for not speaking French. There were calls for him to be fired immediately, regardless of the impact he may have had on the ice, and in the end, when the Habs finished at the bottom of the Eastern Conference, the writing was on the wall for Cunneyworth.
