The Detroit Red Wings have hired a pair of architects to design a new arena. HKS, a co-designer of the American Airlines Center where the Dallas Mavericks play, will team with Chan Krieger NBBJ out of Boston to come up with a new home for the Red Wings in downtown Detroit.

Joe Louis Arena has hosted the Red Wings for the last 33 years. The team also considered renovating the aging West Riverfront facility, as well as building a shared space with the Detroit Pistons. If the Red Wings go through with their plans to build just behind the Fox Theatre, they would be just down the road from the Tigers' Comerica Park and the Lions' Ford Field.

HKS has worked with sports teams before, designing a pair of NFL stadiums, as well as MLB spring training complexes and several college football stadiums and renovations. The architecture firm hasn’t designed a major league arena since the American Airlines Center in 2001, however.
