NHL Playoff TV Ratings: Series High For Devils Vs. Rangers Game 5

Game 5 between the Rangers and Devils was the highest rated game of the NHL’s conference final round to date.

The New Jersey Devils and New York Rangers set a ratings record in New York for their back-and-forth Game 5 and a series best for NBC Sports Network nationally.

The Devils’ Game 5 victory over the Rangers drew 1.43 million viewers on NBCSN Wednesday night, easily the most-watched game of the series, as well as of the NHL’s entire conference final round, on cable. The game also hit a series high with an 0.6 in the key adults 18-to-49 demographic, tied for eighth on cable for the night. It is, however, down 5 percent from Game 5 of the 2011 Eastern Conference final between the Boston Bruins and Tampa Bay Lightning, which drew 1.51 million viewers on Versus.

The ratings for Wednesday night’s game were noteworthy given NBC’s decision to ban the Devils from holding a viewing party for Game 5. The network has also banned the Rangers from hosting one for Game 6. With the numbers heading up the first time they’ve tried this, don’t expect to see parties allowed in Newark, New York or Los Angeles the rest of the way.

The 2012 Eastern Conference final on NBC Sports Network has averaged 1.32 million viewers through four telecasts (Game 3 aired on NBC), down 13 percent from the average through four telecasts in 2011 of 1.5 million.
